The town: sea-front cafés, churches and squares
Aigio rises in three tiers above the gulf. On the waterfront, the old stone raisin warehouses now spread café tables right beside the railway tracks and the sea. Climb to the Upper Town for Psila Alonia square — all greenery, a neo-Gothic clock tower from 1900 and a vast plane tree said to date back to the traveller Pausanias. Don't miss Panagia Trypiti, a pilgrimage church built into a 30-metre cliff above the shore, and the Archaeological Museum, housed in an 1890 Ernst Ziller building.
The Odontotos rack railway & the Vouraikos Gorge
Fifteen minutes east in Diakopto begins one of Europe's great little railways. The historic Odontotos cogwheel train climbs the wild Vouraikos Gorge — through tunnels, over bridges and beside waterfalls — to the mountain town of Kalavryta, stopping at tiny Zachlorou on the way. It's a one-hour journey that every visitor remembers.
Kalavryta, the monasteries & the Cave of the Lakes
Kalavryta blends history and mountain air. Above it clings Mega Spilaio, considered the oldest monastery in Greece (362 AD), carved into a cliff; nearby, Agia Lavra is honoured as the cradle of the 1821 Greek Revolution. The town's memorial and museum recall the WWII tragedy of 1943. Half an hour away, the Cave of the Lakes at Kastria is unique — thirteen cascading lakes across three underground levels. In winter, the Kalavryta Ski Centre on Mt Helmos opens the slopes.
Beaches along the Corinthian Gulf
The gulf shore is all pebbles and clear, deep water. Closest to the apartment are Temeni and Alykia; a little further, Trapeza is one of the loveliest beaches in the northern Peloponnese, while the Selianitika–Lampiri coast offers shallow, family-friendly swimming and seaside tavernas.
Mountain villages, lakes & springs
Behind the coast, the Aigialeia mountains hide green villages and cool water. Lake Tsivlou — the only natural alpine lake in the Peloponnese — sits at 800m below fir forests near Zarouchla. At Planitero, springs of the Aroanios river feed a magical plane-tree forest with trout pools, while villages like Seliana offer centuries-old plane trees, orchards and mountain tavernas.
Wine country: the sea-facing vineyards of Aigialeia
Aigialeia is one of Greece's finest wine regions, and unusually its terraced vineyards face north, towards the sea, cooled by mountain air. Visit producers like Tetramythos, Oenoforos (Rouvalis), Cavino and Acheon for crisp local whites from Roditis and Lagorthi, and reds from Mavrodaphne. Each summer the Oinoxenia festival celebrates the harvest with tastings and music in the vines.
Patras & the wider region
Just 30 minutes west, Patras is Greece's third city and its gateway to Italy by ferry, famous for the largest Carnival in the country each February–March and the grand church of Agios Andreas.
